Straughn Drops 27 Points Against St. Joseph's College

New York, NY – The CCNY Women’s Basketball Team shot an impressive 48 percent, compared to St. Joseph’s 30 percent, to defeat their opponents by a score of 73-58 at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.


The Beavers dominated most of the statistical categories at the end of the contest. Defensively the Beavers had 13 steals and showed their strength in the paint as they out rebounded their opponents 54 to 27. 


The first half was a back and forth affair as both teams continued to trade leads. With the score tied at 17 and 6 minutes left on the clock, the Beavers went on a 16-4 run to take a commanding 33-21 lead. During the run, Ashley Straughn (Freeport, NY) scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds as she helped her team pull away and take control of the game. After a few buckets by Ilaria Schiano, St. Joseph’s decreased the Beavers lead to 35-26 at the end of the first half.  


St. Joseph’s came out strong in the second half and cut the Beavers lead to 47-43, but that was as close as they came to regaining the lead. The Beavers went on a 12-5 run and never looked back as they continued racking up the points to accomplish the double digit victory. 

Straughn had her best collegiate game to date as she picked up an impressive double-double scoring 27 points and grabbing 22 rebounds. Rynae Rasley (Arizona) was the teams’ second leading scorer with 10 points, while grabbing 9 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists. Freshman Taryn VanEsselstyn (Chatham, MA) continued her stellar play by providing her team with 9 points and 8 rebounds in their winning efforts.


The leading scorers for St. Joseph’s were Nathalie Masterreno and Ilaria Schiano with 24 and 23 points each. Masterreno showed her defensive skills as she had 8 of her team’s 11 steals. Schiano scored her 1,000th career point on the second of two made free throws with 3:58 left in the game.

 

The women’s basketball team will resume action against conference foe York College on Wednesday afternoon with a 5:00 pm start time at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.

Athletes of the Week
Yanique Newman
Women's Soccer
Yanique Newman was named the City College of New York's Female Athlete of the Week for the period spanning Monday, September 19th through Sunday, September 25th.

Newman earned the honor's after putting forth a phenomenal performance against Mount Saint Vincent in which the offensive sparkplug scored a pair of goals in the Beavers' 4-1 rout of the Dolphins. She is expected to be an offensive leader for City College this season.

Men's Soccer
Men's soccer standout Tayfun Kucuk was named the City Collefge of New York Male Athlete of the Week for the period of Monday, September 19th through Sunday, September 25th.

The John F. Kennedy High School product had a tough start to his week, allowing four goals in a 4-0 defeat at the hands of New York University on September 12th. He bounced back well, though, allowing just one goal against York College in CCNY's 3-1 victory over the Cardinals on September 14th in Jamaica, Queens. The 5'11 junior also played his heart out in CCNY's 1-0 loss to SUNY Purchase, as he made many key saves and allowed just one goal to as the Panthers edged CCNY 1-0 on September 17th.
