Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Ashley Straughn


For the second time this season, Ashley Straughn (Freeport, NY), a junior at the City College of New York, is this week’s CUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Week. On the week, she shot .632 in two games in which the Beavers split against conference foes Brooklyn College and Lehman College. A Freeport HS alum, Straughn scored 19 points, shooting 6-10 from the field, while going 7-8 from the charity stripe and grabbing seven rebounds in the 57-55 win over the Bulldogs. The 6’1” center continued her dominance on the court in the Beavers’ next game, despite an 82-77 loss to the Lightning. She scored 21 points, shooting .667 from the field and .692 from the line while grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking two shots. She averages 15.6 points per game, good for fifth in the conference. Meanwhile, her 10.3 rebounds per game are sixth on the CUNYAC leader board.

 

 

Men’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Matthew Ng


Freshman Matthew Ng (Baysid, NY) had a stellar week hitting .223 while totaling 24 kills in just two matches played. The 6’0” outside hitter tallied 12 kills in the first game of his collegiate career, a four-set loss to Stevenson University. Later on that afternoon, the Beavers faced Lancaster Bible where the Francis Lewis alum had an additional 12 kills and added 16 digs and two service aces. CCNY travels to the SUNY-IT Tournament this weekend where they will face off against D’Youville and Wentworth.

Athletes of the Week
Andrew Romanella
Baseball
The freshman played in all five games for the Beavers this week, batting an even .500. His 9-for-18 effort included six runs scored, two doubles, an RBI, a walk, and three stolen bases, as he improved his season average to .370.
Rollesscia Hurd-Rosa
Women's Indoor Track and Field
The junior had a solid meet at the Danny Curran Invitational. She finished 27th in the long jump with a distance of 4.35 meters and followed it up with her best performance of the meet, finishing 10th in the triple jump with a distance of 9.88 meters.
