Straughn Scores 20 Points As Beavers Fall To Hunter

New York - The City College of New York was defeated by conference foe Hunter College by a score of 62-71 Sunday afternoon at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.


Ashley Straughn (Freeport, NY) and Taryn VanEsselstyn (Chatham, MA) recorded their seventeenth and ninth double-double of the season for the Beavers. Straughn scored 20 points and came down with 14 rebounds, while VanEsselstyn added 16 points and 14 rebounds of her own. Simone Tharkur (White Plains, NY) finished the game with 11 points and 3 steals, as senior Rynae Rasley (Arizona) added 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals in her last collegiate regular home game.


For the Hawks, S. Branch El-Vielot and Deseree Boler scored 20 and 17 points respectively. Juanita Whyms finished with a double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Shamar Stewartson scored 11 points and added a game high 8 assists.


With the loss, CCNY drops to 9-15 (5-8 CUNYAC) in the season, while Hunter improves to 15-9 (10-3 CUNYAC).

Women's Indoor Track and Field
The junior had a solid meet at the Danny Curran Invitational. She finished 27th in the long jump with a distance of 4.35 meters and followed it up with her best performance of the meet, finishing 10th in the triple jump with a distance of 9.88 meters.

The freshman played in all five games for the Beavers this week, batting an even .500. His 9-for-18 effort included six runs scored, two doubles, an RBI, a walk, and three stolen bases, as he improved his season average to .370.
