Men's Volleyball Finish SUNY IT Tournament As Bronze Pool Champions

New York, NY - The Beavers completed the SUNY IT tournament with a 2-2 record as they were proclaimed Bronze pool champions.

 

In the first match of the tournament, CCNY fell to Lancaster Bible by a score of 0-3 (28-30, 20-30, 12-30). Middle blockers Johnson Ho (Glen Cove, NY) and Nick Siriban (East Meadow, NY) led the attack as both finished with 10 kills apiece. Sophomore setter Jonathan Aguirre (Corona, NY) finished with 18 assists before having to be subbed out due to injury. Freshman libero Xihe Xie (Forest Hills, NY) and senior outside hitter Terrence Tsui (Woodhaven, NY) contributed defensively with 8 and 7 digs respectively.

 

In the second match of the day, Carthage College defeated CCNY by a score of 0-3 (11-30, 10-30, 15-30). Senior outside hitter Terrence Tsui (Woodhaven, NY) took over setting duties for the rest of the tournament after the injury to Aguirre. Tsui finished the match with 12 assists, while Nick Siriban finished the match with a .444 hitting percentage.

 

The Beavers bounced back in their last match of the day against Sage College as they defeated their opponents by a score of 3-1 (30-23, 30-25, 24-30, 30-27). Terrence Tsui (Woodhaven, NY) took control of the team and ran a very effective offense, dishing out 23 assists, as the team hit 0.290 for the match. Freshman middle blocker Nick Siriban (East Meadow, NY) led the Beaver’s offensive finishing with 16 kills. Fellow teammate Johnson Ho (Glen Cove, NY) added 10 kills and 5 solo blocks, while freshman Rubin Taipi (Shkoder, Albania) contributed posted 10 kills on 16 swings with only 1 error for a team high 0.562 hitting percentage.

 

In the second day of action, the Beavers achieved a convincing victory over Regis College by a score of 3-0 (30-27, 30-8, 30-7) to finish champions of the Bronze pool. Once again the Beavers offense was extremely effective as they 0.378 for the match. Freshmen Nick Siriban (East Meadow, NY) and Matthew Ng (Bayside, NY) led the offense with 18 and 16 kills respectively as both finished with a 0.600 hitting percentage. Terrence Tsui (Woodhaven, NY) finished an impressive weekend with 31 assists on the match. As a team, the Beavers finished with a season high 18 digs in the match.  

 

The Beavers next taste of action will be at the CUNYAC Multi-Match hosted by York College. The Beavers will face conference foes Brooklyn College and York College at 1 PM and 3 PM.

Athletes of the Week
Tayfun Kucuk
Men's Soccer
Men's soccer standout Tayfun Kucuk was named the City Collefge of New York Male Athlete of the Week for the period of Monday, September 19th through Sunday, September 25th.

The John F. Kennedy High School product had a tough start to his week, allowing four goals in a 4-0 defeat at the hands of New York University on September 12th. He bounced back well, though, allowing just one goal against York College in CCNY's 3-1 victory over the Cardinals on September 14th in Jamaica, Queens. The 5'11 junior also played his heart out in CCNY's 1-0 loss to SUNY Purchase, as he made many key saves and allowed just one goal to as the Panthers edged CCNY 1-0 on September 17th.
Yanique Newman
Women's Soccer
Yanique Newman was named the City College of New York's Female Athlete of the Week for the period spanning Monday, September 19th through Sunday, September 25th.

Newman earned the honor's after putting forth a phenomenal performance against Mount Saint Vincent in which the offensive sparkplug scored a pair of goals in the Beavers' 4-1 rout of the Dolphins. She is expected to be an offensive leader for City College this season.
