Box Score - v. Brooklyn

Box Score - v. York

New York, NY - On the first CUNY multi-match hosted by York College, CCNY Men’s Volleyball team battled two tough opponents.  They emerged victorious in the first match against Brooklyn College but unfortunately failed to capture the win versus York College.

Despite losing the first two sets of their first match against Brooklyn, they rebounded from an early-game slump and managed to pull out victorious, winning the last three sets of the match (29-31, 27-30, 30-24, 30-16, 15-3).  Freshman outside hitter Matthew Ng (Baysid, NY) led the team with 16 kills, 9 digs and 3 serving aces.  Junior Setter and Team Co-Captain Jonathan Aguirre (Corona, NY) dished out 48 assists while providing strong defense with 12 digs.  Sophomore Johnson Ho’s (Glen Cove, NY) solid play, 11 kills (.308), 5 key blocks also helped shift the momentum for the Beavers.

The second match was as exciting as the first as the Beavers fell short against the Cardinals of York College. After defeating Brooklyn College, the Beavers began their second challenge of the day with a first-set win. The Cardinals swept the next three sets to achieve the victory by a score of 1-3 (30-28, 25-30, 19-30, 26-30).  Freshman middle blocker Nick Siriban (East Meadow, NY) led the attack with 14 kills supported by outside hitter Matthew Ng’s (Bayside, NY) 10 kills, both players also provided 7 kills respectively.  Setter Jonathan Aguirre (Corona, NY) supplied the team with 43 assists and 4 digs.

“I thought we showed great team character in the first match against Brooklyn,” said Coach Palatulan, “unfortunately in our match with York, we showed our youth.”

Coach Palatulan remains very optimistic, adding, “I can’t wait to see our players grow and develop as the season progresses.”

The Beavers will return to action Tuesday, February 9, 2010 against another conference opponent, Hunter College.
