Baseball To Face John Jay in CUNYAC Quarterfinals
Bookmark and Share
New York, NY – The culmination of every team’s season is the playoffs.  For Dave Yorke and the No. 3 seed Beavers (13-18, 5-7 CUNYAC), it will start with a 1st round game against John Jay (10-26, 6-6 CUNYAC) this Thursday at MCU Field.  The playoff showdown promises to be an exciting one as the teams scored a combine total of sixty-nine runs in the three games they played over this past weekend.  John Jay took two of the three games, edging CCNY in the third game by a score of 14-13.

The Beavers will come out looking for some redemption.  The young Beavers team often looks unbeatable but has also had some games they would rather forget.  The Beavers have struggled down the stretch, but still managed to amass 13 wins which puts them second all-time in CCNY history for wins in a season.  Needless to say, CCNY has potential to make noise in this wide open playoff.

CSI is the top seed with a CUNYAC record of 11-1 followed by John Jay at 6-6, CCNY at 5-7 and Baruch at 5-7.

Senior and 2nd team ALL-CUNY honoree Willis Fernandez (New York, NY) leads the team in batting average (.378), runs scored (32), stolen bases (24), is the Beavers’ offensive catalyst hitting in the leadoff spot.  Fernandez is also tied in the lead with Junior Ruben Angeles (New York, NY) (3) in the homerun category.  Angeles, who garnered 1st Team ALL-CUNY accolades as a Utility player, is also the Beaver’s leaver in wins with 3.  Willis Fernandez does double duty as CCNY’s closer and has recorded four saves which leads the CUNYAC.  Senior Raymie Fernandez (New York, NY) (1st Team ALL-CUNY Catcher) leads the Beavers in RBIs with 28.  Sophomore Daniel Perez (New York, NY) (1st Team ALL-CUNY 1B) and Junior Michael Dominguez (Brooklyn, NY) (2nd Team ALL-CUNY Utility) round out a lineup that has power and speed.

The game between CCNY and John Jay is scheduled to start 4 PM Thursday, following the game between No. 1 CSI and No. 4 Baruch at 1 PM.

The CUNYAC Baseball Playoffs is a double elimination tournament, and all games will be played at the MCU Field, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones. Thursday’s losers will face each other on Friday at 1 p.m. in an elimination game, while the two winners from Thursday will play Friday at 4 p.m. in a winners bracket game. Friday’s 1 p.m. winner will then play Friday’s 4 p.m. loser at 7 p.m. Friday evening. The championship game will take place Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. and if necessary, the final game will be played right after at 4 p.m.

There will be a free fan van leaving the City College at 2:30 PM, in front of Marshak Hall.  All are encouraged to come and support!
